Complete sets of these engravings are rare. There was one gifted to Jacques Necker by Louis XVI that is in the collection of the Château Coppet in Switzerland.
These engravings are from the second edition of the series Les Conquêtes de L'Empereur de la Chine, which was comissioned by Emperor Qianlong in 1765 (see lot 100). This edition, based on the design of the original, was engraved by Isidore Stanislas Helman who was a pupil of Le Bas. While the first edition contained only sixteen engravings, Helman added additional scenes of the conquests, including these two plates.
