Note:
The Nanking Cargo sale at Christie’s Amsterdam occurred after significant quantities of the stunning export-quality blue and white porcelain known as ‘Nanking’ or ‘Nankeeng’ was discovered on the sea floor, along with a large number of gold ingots. This remarkable treasure was found in mint condition by Captain Michael Hatcher and his team, and provides a fascinating reflection of Western taste and decoration of the eighteenth century. The supreme quality and low cost of the porcelain was untouched by contemporary British companies at the time, and had the cargo reached its destination, it would have brought its ubiquitous element of eastern richness to many an elegant European table setting.
