François-Xavier Marange was born in France in 1948. He studied etching at the and immigrated to Montreal, Quebec in 1982. He studied intaglio printmaking at the Leblanc, Lacourière-Frélaut and Maeght studios in Paris and worked with renowned artists such as Friedlander, Lam, Miró, Tàpies, Zao Wou-Ki. In 1982, Marange moved to Montreal at the invitation of Louis-Pierre Bougie, whom he befriended in Paris. Along with the founding members, Marange helped shape the mission of Atelier Circulaire: to create a “platform” for the transmission traditional printmaking and to work towards an illuminated rehabilitation of this artistic practice in Montreal and beyond. Always keen to pass on what he had learned, Marange prepared the drawings and supervised the construction of the atelier’s large press, and started the tradition of open studio Fridays that are still in effect today. He taught at the studio and dedicated himself to introducing the art of printmaking in Quebec.
Marange presented his work in several solo exhibitions in Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Vienna, Paris and Majorca, and took part in more than fifty group exhibitions, including shows at Galerie Libéral Bruant in Paris, the Toronto International Art Fair and the Île-de-France International Engraving Biennial in Versailles. His work is found in several public and private collections in Canada. François-Xavier Marange died in 2012.
