MONIQUE CLICHE-SPENARD
Note:
Monique Cliche-Spénard was born in Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce, Quebec, in 1926. She studied oil painting at the School of Arts and Crafts, in Saint-George, Quebec. A descendant of one of the region’s 18th century seigneurial families, Cliche-Spénard sought to depict the old ways of her people, the Beaucerons. In the early 1970’s, Cliche-Spénard began collecting a variety of antique Beauce textiles, ancestral techniques and traditional motifs of quilting, and constructed her own unique quilts.
Cliche-Spénard’s works are a bridge between traditional art, which highlights folk art motifs and techniques of the Beauce quilting and popular art, which emphasizes contemporary graphic design. In 1979, she was the recipient of the prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in her craft.
