Note:
Marc Chagall did not become involved with lithography until his move to the United States of America in the 1940s but the medium proved well suited to capture the dream-like atmosphere of his paintings. L’Arbe de jesse is conceived with accents of greens, blues, and a florid red. Broadly, Chagall’s graphic works are unabashedly painterly. Here, the lithographic medium creates an image that is virtually devoid of any indication that it is mechanically created; it is not flat but romantic in its intensity and reminds us how beautiful the earthen palette can be in a modern setting.
