GEORGE TATANIQ (1910-1991)
Additional Images
Provenance:
Work sourced by Jack & Sheila Butler for the vendor.
Note:
“Baker Lake art is noted for the depiction of mythological and religious subjects. A legend which Tataniq illustrates again and again is that of the Fox Woman. [...] There is some debate as to whether or not the woman in the legend turns into a fox or a wolf. The broad features ... certainly appear more wolf-like, even resembling a bear more than a fox. However, I defer to a quote from the artist as recorded by Marie Routledge: ‘It is a fox. The story I heard before was that she turned into a woman. [One] leg has a human foot and the other one [a] fox’s paw.’”
