Note:
One of Canada's leading abstract painters, Bolduc was a master of colour and composition. The dynamic “Nan” is characteristic of Bolduc's work, featuring a centrally placed form – in this case, a network of multi-coloured lines – floating atop a boldly painted colour field. The spontaneous energy of the background contrasts with the methodical construction of the central image, representative of the artist's approach to painting that combined playfulness with thoughtful preparation. Bolduc used colour and form to evoke mood; however, the artist was also wellaware that abstraction courts subjective responses. In this way, “Nan” is both emotive and elusive.
