Provenance:
Dominion Gallery, Montreal
Marlborough-Godard, Toronto/Montreal
Private Collection, Toronto
Literature:
Francois-Marc Gagnon, Paul-Emile Borduas (1905-1960), Biographie critique et analyse de l’oeuvre, Montreal, 1978, page 386, footnote 14.
Max Stern, Montreal Dealer and Patron, catalogue, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, 2004, pages 27 and 31.
Note:
Gagnon writes that Dr. Stern, proprietor of the Dominion Gallery, announced in a notice dated July 13, 1955 that he had concluded a sale with Borduas for eleven paintings, including Vibration Grise (sic). It is interesting to note that Dr. Stern gave Borduas his first solo exhibition in a commercial gallery and, when the artist exiled himself to Paris in 1956, the Dominion Gallery continued buying works from him on a regular basis.
